Your head, heart and spirit working together
Speaker: Scott Sheperd, PhD
Crystal I

As you prepare yourself to move into another phase of your life it is critical that you take stock of your strengths, weaknesses, goals, expectations, priorities and how you combine your thinking, feeling and spiritual attributes to cope with your life. Many people think that going into retirement is not that big of a deal. Those people usually have problems. Preparing for retirement is more than just making sure your money is together. If you have acquired some bad habits or lost touch with how you interact with your life the change of retirement can be overwhelming. It is critical to understand the relationship between what you think, what you feel and how you incorporate your spiritual life into your decision making. Emotional powerhouses – those people who accept responsibility for their lives do much better when they move into new situations than emotional victims – those people who blame everyone else for their problems. We will explore what makes emotional and spiritual powerhouses and how that can help in coping with the changes brought about by retirement.

This session will give the results of a survey in which ten denominations have participated in. This survey measured self report health and well being indicators, religious formation and job characteristics including stress related to being either a clergy person or a lay worker of the church. The self report survey data has been aligned where available with pharmacy claim data.  These results should cause us to further examine the health of the workers of the Church with findings that appear to be quite distinctive to this population.  Keith G. Meador, MD, ThM, MPH, Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center will present the results, their implications and how this will allow us to discuss possible interventions.
